Flavor God seasonings are one of the most talked about food products on Instagram these days. Created by Chef Chris Wallace, they are the go-to spices for many people following vegan, paleo and low-calorie diets. These seasoning mixtures are all chemical-free, ground fresh to order, and without MSG. We have been monitoring these on Instagram (@flavorgod) for awhile now. Last week we finally bit the bullet and placed an order. We went with the combo pack, which included the following flavors: Lemon & Garlic, Garlic Lovers, Everything, Everything Spicy, and the limited edition Chocolate Donut. Here's what we thought:
Lemon & Garlic:
Review: The Lemon & Garlic seasoning is true to its name and is very much equal parts lemon and garlic flavors. Its flavor profile starts out strong with garlic when it first hits your tongue and is then followed by the sweetness of lemon. The seasoning has a robust smell and you can tell right away that it's fresh. Pictured above, you can see that the seasoning has a large grain and you can actually see what's in the mixture, including garlic, onion, sea salt, coriander, paprika, basil, pepper parsley, lemon peel, and oregano. This blend is very versatile and can easily be used on a variety of meats and in numerous recipes. We highly recommend it.
Review: The Garlic Lovers seasoning is very similar to the Lemon & Garlic blend, but with the absence of the lemon peel, you really get all garlic, all the time. Its flavor profile hits you immediately with a garlic bomb, followed by a hint of heat provided by the California chili pepper. The garlic smell is unmistakable. You can really appreciate the freshness of the product as it just smells better than the typical blend of garlic seasoning in our cabinet. This blend is certainly not for everyone, especially those who are not fans of garlic. However, it would be the perfect addition for any of your Italian dishes or spice rubs requiring garlic.
Review: The Everything seasoning includes onion, garlic, sea salt, California chili peppers, cumin, coriander, paprika, black pepper, basil, and parsley. It really is practically everything in the spice rack. This mix really highlights cumin and it over powers the rest of the spices to an extent. It reminds us of a the type of mixture you would put together for a spice rub on a pork shoulder or roast. The flavor, like the smell, is strong with cumin, which is followed by garlic and the rest of the ingredients. This mix would be ideal for those needing a ready-made spice rub. We are not huge cumin people so this mix is a bit much for us, but again, the quality is evident and we look forward to using this for our next round of pulled pork.
Review: Everything we said about the Everything seasoning stands true for the Everything Spicy blend, except for the HEAT! Man they are not skimping on heat. This mixture is ideal for Mexican style dishes and anything that you want to add some depth of flavor to. We are gluttons for heat and hot sauce so we preferred the Everything Spicy to the regular Everything Seasoning.
Review: This must be a joke. Seriously, this has 0 calories? Well whatever the answer, we don't want to know because this is an amazing addition to the spice collection. Chocolate Donut is everything you could ask for, especially if you have a chocolate habit and you are trying to watch what you eat. It has a nice chocolate smell with a hint of cinnamon. The taste is surprisingly sweet and chocolatey. This would be great on just about everything. You may even consider eating it straight out of the bottle. We were lucky to get this from a limited batch, but if it makes another appearance we suggest you get this one ASAP.
Should or Should Not Eat: Flavor God seasonings are not short on quality. It's clear that Chef Chris Wallace really cares about the product he is creating. Given the price and size of the bottle, you really are getting a deal. Most in-store spice mixtures have been on the shelf for weeks or even months and come in tiny bottles. These massive 5oz bottles put all others to shame. Our order cost $37.99, which is approx. $7.50 per bottle (about the going store price for those tiny bottles). We would love to see a bit more variety of flavors being offered as many of them have very similar flavor profiles. However, they are always releasing limited edition flavors that definitely should not be missed. We still regret missing out on the Chipotle blend and have our fingers crossed that it's coming back soon. We highly recommend the Everything Spicy, Lemon & Garlic, and if you have the chance, Chocolate Donut. Flavor God spices have lived up to the hype and are a Should Eat.
